  1. INT. EVERMORE STATION. NIGHT

The 9:15pm (steam) train has just arrived at the town of Evermore, North Yorkshire. As it stops the travellers disembark onto the empty platform; the Porters, Flags-man and Vendors now take their places.

From Carriage 3, a young THOMAS BRINDLEY-WHITE and a young CARRIE BRINDLEY-WHITE step off onto the platform before turning to look at one another.

THOMAS

Have you got everything, Sis?

(Sound Effects of the train’s hydraulics are heard almost drowning out his voice)

CARRIE

(looks down at the large pile of cases)

I believe that is everything (pauses with a look of suspicion) Oh, hang on!

CARRIE looks down at the luggage, at one particular case that has caught her eye – a small Vanity Case – the lock itself has been broken.

CARRIE (CONT’D)

That’s strange! Someone has opened my case. Look, the lock has been broken!

THOMAS shrugs his shoulders.

THOMAS

Maybe it just burst open with the amount of clothes you bring, Sis, it wouldn’t half surprise me! (laughs out loudly)

CARRIE

(becomes annoyed)

Very funny, Thomas, but unfortunately, it is my private case…!

THOMAS quickly cuts in on CARRIE to point up at the Train Announcement sign. The train is about ready to leave.

THOMAS

That was quick, the train is about to leave, I’ll see you in three weeks, Carrie…

CARRIE

(sad, nervous)

Three weeks, Thomas!

THOMAS looks away at the train, seeing that the FLAGS-MAN is about to wave the red flag for the driver to pull away. He runs back to the train, jumps up onto it and waves to CARRIE.

THOMAS

I’ll see you in three weeks, you’ll be fine…Love you, Sis!

CARRIE is embarrassed with both shame and pride. She waves a kiss and waves as the train now takes her Brother out of sight. EDWARD – from Evermore Manor – has walked up behind her and makes ready to introduce himself.

EDWARD (O.C.)

Good Evening Miss Brindley-White, my name is Edward, I am here to take you up to Evermore.

CARRIE is startled by the sudden appearance of the gentleman – she jumps back.

CARRIE

(gasps for air)

Oh, I say! It is not polite to sneak up on people like that. You almost gave me a heart attack!

EDWARD takes off his flat cap and bows his head graciously to an apology.

EDWARD

Apologies, Miss Brindley-White, may I take your cases? (looks down at the luggage before giving a deep sigh). Is this all of them, Miss?

CARRIE, too, gives an understanding sigh.

CARRIE

I think we’re going to need some help, Edward, would you mind awfully finding a Station Porter, or someone who may help us back to your car with these cases. They are very heavy some of them.

Watching EDWARD disappear for a few moments, he returned quickly with three strapping young men from the Station Master’s Office. Two of these spoke very little English, though the third spoke too much.

TRISTAN

I could carry a few of those cases, maybe five or six! (turns to the other two men) What do you think? Five or maybe six?’

TRISTAN now caught the discerning eye of CARRIE, who turns immediately to EDWARD, just as he tumbles to the ground crying out in agony!

EDWARD

(screaming)

MY BACK! OH, MY BACK! It’s gone!

TRISTAN falls into deep thought for a moment.

CARRIE

(angry and livid)

Well, that’s just great!

EDWARD is laid squirming on the floor, until the two foreign Burley men pick him up gently back onto his feet. TRISTAN points over to the office.

TRISTAN

Take him over to The Station Master’s Office, let him rest up for a while.

EDWARD (TO CARRIE)

I’m sorry, Miss Brindley-White, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to contact the house and request another driver for you, there’s no way I can take the journey with this bad back.

CARRIE shows sympathy for EDWARD. TRISTAN steps forward and bows his head at CARRIE.

TRISTAN

I can take you up to Evermore and Edward could arrange for your luggage to be brought up to you tomorrow, perhaps, Miss. Brindley-White?

EDWARD ponders on the suggestion, as does CARRIE, too, and unfortunately takes no shine to the offer from a stranger. Though both have looks that say otherwise.

CARRIE

(in a dry tone)

I’ll walk!

TRISTAN

(shocked)

Walk! Are you…I’m sorry, Miss. Brindle-White, but I was given strict…!

CARRIE

(angry)

You’re fired! I’ll walk, now you can all get back to whatever it is you’d be doing after you’ve finished work. Thank you, Sir, for the offer, but I am in no way introduced or acquainted with you…!

TRISTAN takes a step forward slowly.

TRISTAN

Tristan. My name is Tristan, Miss. Brindley-White.

The whole station falls to silence – deafly silence – as CARRIE crumbles; she is excited but contains it well, she is comfortable but prepared, and she is content but ready.

CARRIE

Tristan!

TRISTAN points a finger to the EXIT of the station, while showing a gentle smile.

TRISTAN

My car is over here at the ENTRANCE, Miss. Brindley-White. Is there one or two cases that you would need before morning? (looks down at the pile of cases again).

Suddenly, without warning or any provocation, CARRIE verbally attacks TRISTAN.

CARRIE

You must look upon all women as weak! (puts her hands on her hips) And imbeciles, too, may I add?

TRISTAN shakes his head – he’s hurt, deep down.

TRISTAN

You are so much like your Mother, Carrie, it’s frightfully alarming!

CARRIE is caught in a Flux; she is angry, and yet she is mentally accepting the compliment. This is eventually replaced with a look of doubt.

CARRIE

You tread on very thin ground Mr….?

TRISTAN

(amused)

You don’t remember me, do you, Carrie? (laughs out loudly)

CARRIE looks into TRISTAN’s eyes deeply searching for something that would recall knowing him. What she finds is something of restriction, border and bounds. TRISTAN is looking at CARRIE – Really looking at her.

CARRIE

Who are you?

Both CARRIE and TRISTAN are standing very close together, CARRIE’s whole body is feeling strange, she is weakened by TRISTAN, and suddenly finds herself standing so close that with a simple leaning forward of their heads, their lips met and kissed. A moment later it was all over. CARRIE still stood kissing the smoky air, while TRISTAN pulls away quickly.

TRISTAN

(laughs with joy)

Tristan Lazenby, Miss. Brindley-White, at your service.

CARRIE’s eyes flick open quickly to see TRISTAN again looking at her, only this time, her eyes look dreamy.

CARRIE

(flustered)

You kissed me!

TRISTAN

(rubs his chin)

Actually, you kissed me, I was just kissing you back out of courtesy. Now, I think we should get some of these cases and take them to my car before it starts getting light, don’t you agree?

CARRIE nods her head to agree while turning to face the pile of cases. Picking up a few each they walk to the EXIT, while being waved off by EDWARD and the two other men who were tending him.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

  1. EXT. EVERMORE STATION – MAIN ENTRANCE. NIGHT

CARRIE has walked ahead of TRISTAN, who is almost struggling with the fact her cases are a lot heavier than those of TRISTAN’s.

TRISTAN

(gasps)

It’s open…Just…!

As soon as CARRIE reaches the car she drops all the cases she is carrying straight onto the ground, while turning around to TRISTAN looking at her with mixed confusion.

CARRIE

(confused)

You kissed me…On the lips, Mr. Lazenby…How?

TRISTAN laughed.

TRISTAN

How did I kiss you, do you mean? (opens the boot and throws in the cases)

CARRIE was starting to over think.

CARRIE

(suspicious)

Did my Aunt send you to…?

TRISTAN

To seduce you? Yes, she wanted you to know that it is better a relationship fall out of the sky and find you, than for you to waste away a lonely, childless old woman. She also passed comment on your weight problem, too!

The moment was lost.

CARRIE

(angry)

What the hell did you just say to me?

TRISTAN puts up a calming, reassuring hand.

TRISTAN

Chill out, Okay, nobody sent me. You really don’t remember me, do you, Carrie? (he becomes sad) All these years and you’ve forgotten me, like I never even existed!

The anger, the pain and driving frustration lead her to a vicious response, one of which none of it managed to leave her lips.

CARRIE

I’m sorry, I don’t remember you…I was…!

TRISTAN

Brainwashed? (laughs)

CARRIE is stood giggling with TRISTAN, until suddenly CARRIE’s smile disappears.

CARRIE

No. I was in an accident three years ago, I don’t like to talk about it, really. Through it I lost parts of my memory with you is…erm…!

TRISTAN

I’m sorry!

CARRIE puts up a friendly hand that begged him not to take the matter to heart.

CARRIE

No need to apologize, Mr. Lazenby, many of my memories return, just not as quickly as I would like them to, that’s all (laughs).

TRISTAN pauses for a moment. Closing the boot after putting the last case inside, he turns to CARRIE and stares her right in the eyes, again.

TRISTAN

I mean for kissing you, I shouldn’t have done that!

Carrie is confused. The look she saw in his eyes before began to creep up on her, almost as if it was searching for her. She pulls away her eyes and looks around the car park at the Station.

CARRIE

(sigh)

Home!

TRISTAN

Home! You mean?

CARRIE

Yes, Mr. Lazenby, can you please take me home?

Opening the passenger door he helps CARRIE into the passenger seat, then runs around the car to get in himself. One last glance at CARRIE’s happy looking face and he starts the engine.

TRISTAN

Let’s go!

FADE IN:

  1. INT./EXT. THE OLD MILL. EVERMORE – NIGHT

CARRIE and TRISTAN are inside the car heading to Evermore on Evermore Road, laughing, talking and joking. CARRIE sees THE OLD MILL from her window and yelps!

CARRIE

Oh, My God! Is that…?’

TRISTAN

The Old Mill, yes it is, it was bought a year ago by one of the residents, who then made it into a house.

CARRIE looks at it with pride showing on her face.

CARRIE

(whispers)

I can only imagine what it looks like inside.

Pushing up on the indicator and turning off of the road onto the drive of The Old Mill, TRISTAN stops outside the main doors of the converted building.

CARRIE

(puzzled)

What are you doing?

TRISTAN shows only a smile before exiting the car and walking around to CARRIE’s side to open her door, and with an inviting hand he pulls her up out of the car before closing the door quietly behind her.

TRISTAN

(quietly whispers)

Please, follow me, but be as quiet as you can!

Walking up to the front door, TRISTAN crouches down and lifts up the Front Door Matt where there is a key. Taking the key, putting it in the lock and opening the door, he turns and reaches out a hand to CARRIE. She refuses – at first.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

You wanted to know what it looks like inside, so let’s go and have a look…!

CARRIE is suddenly unsure – scared.

CARRIE

(gasps loudly)

No way! You can’t! (looks around) What if they’re still in the house?

TRISTAN walks inside, again, holding out a hand for CARRIE, and this time she accepts (reluctantly). Making straight for the bedroom where TRISTAN walks up to a small mini-bar by the side of the bed, he turns to CARRIE.

TRISTAN

Would you like one, Carrie? Tia Maria and Coke, am I right?

CARRIE is amazed with his guess, but not surprised. CARRIE nods a silent “Yes”.

TRISTAN

We could see if there’s anything in the kitchen, if you are hungry?

CARRIE walks around the bedroom looking at everything that made up the room, taking her time to gaze at pictures and paintings that splattered the walls in a way that pleased her – this how she would have done up the house.

CARRIE

This place is beautiful…Whose is it? (turns around and takes her drink from TRISTAN)

TRISTAN

It has an attic room, the thought was on children…!

CARRIE

(laughs)

You mean Medievally speaking, or maternally speaking?

TRISTAN coughs into his drink with the comment, its liquid spilling onto and staining his pure white silk shirt. Instantly, as if by instinct CARRIE takes a hold of a napkin from the bar and starts dabbing the fabric – all done without a second thought.

CARRIE realizes that TRISTAN is looking at her – really looking at her. She steps back, but TRISTAN takes a gentle hold of her arm.

TRISTAN

(whispers softly)

It’s Okay, I’m here.

TRISTAN takes the Tia Maria and Coke from her and carefully places it back onto the bar, before taking a hold of her hands and raise them to his chest.

CARRIE takes a deep breath before looking up and into TRISTAN’s eyes, shifting, searching within his eyes, until she looks mesmerized.

CARRIE

(dreamily)

Maybe we should go…

TRISTAN

Or, we could check out the attic?

CARRIE

Why? What’s in the attic, Tristan? Is that where the owners are?

CARRIE speaks in a morbid tone, but far less than sinister in her meaning. Adding insult to the laughable suggestion, TRISTAN proceeds to make a very bad impersonation of Egor (Frankenstein reference).

TRISTAN

Their lives are for my Master!

CARRIE is now laughing uncontrollably at TRISTAN’s childish behaviour, which has now somehow triggered a painful Flashback.

TRISTAN

Are you alright? Carrie?

CARRIE collapses to the floor right there in front of him, too quickly for him to catch her.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

  1. INT. THE OLD MILL, BEDROOM – MORNING

CARRIE wakes up in bed to the sun shining through the windows into her eyes. Looking around to see where she is, the room looks unfamiliar, until her eyes focus to see that she was still in The Old Mill.

Instinctively she looks under the bedclothes to notice she has been dressed for bed.

CARRIE

Tristan! Tristan!

TRISTAN rushes into the bedroom.

TRISTAN

Carrie, are you alright? Do you need anything?

CARRIE glances down to the bedclothes several times until TRISTAN realizes why.

TRISTAN

Ah, yes, you were tired and…

CARRIE

(holds up a paused hand)

It’s Okay, I’m sure a young man like yourself has seen many naked women, it only stands to reason, if you don’t mind me saying?

TRISTAN stands nodding his head with a slight smile that irritates CARRIE.

TRISTAN

Actually, you’re not naked. I averted my eyes when putting you into bed, so rest assured, you’re Puppy Fat waist and wonky Belly Button is safe with me! (laughs sarcastically)

CARRIE

Puppy Fat! I’ll have you know…

TRISTAN rushes to the bed before CARRIE can say anything. Lifting her head up gently he draws her closer before meeting her lips with hers.

Resistant at first, she finally warms to the actions and kisses him back passionately. TRISTAN suddenly pulls away without any warning, again.

TRISTAN

Alright, I think that’s enough of an apology, don’t you?

CARRIE

(confused)

Fine. I would like to dress…in private, have breakfast and then go to Evermore Manor, please. When you’re ready, of course?

TRISTAN respects her wishes and walks from the bedroom and straight to the KITCHEN (Camera follows TRISTAN). Searching one cupboards after the next he realizes that he hasn’t bought anything in as regards to food.

TRISTAN

(shouts out)

Why don’t you take a shower and I’ll make us something for breakfast?

There is no answer from CARRIE. TRISTAN shouts out again, only louder, while heading back to the bedroom. Inside he finds CARRIE sitting on the bed holding a piece of clothing in her hands. She is weeping.

TRISTAN

(whispers)

Carrie, what’s wrong?

CARRIE raises the garment for TRISTAN to see.

CARRIE

(low tone)

This is mine! Where did you get it?

TRISTAN is confused by not recognizing the garment. He sits down by her side and cuddles into her.

TRISTAN

I don’t understand!

CARRIE

This is my dress, which I haven’t been able to find in a while…

TRISTAN

So, what are you saying?

CARRIE pushes his reassuring arm away from her and stands angrily to her feet to face him.

CARRIE

How did you get it?

TRISTAN pushes himself back across the bed until he is lent against the headboard.

TRISTAN

(sighs loudly)

You left it here, the last time you came and stayed over…After your accident, of course!

CARRIE

(very confused)

What did you just say?

TRISTAN’s face shows deep regret in what he had just said. An immediate diversion was needed.

TRISTAN

How about we skip breakfast and get you up to Evermore, before we both go to places we don’t want to go, Carrie. Your Aunt will be able to answer your questions, I’m sure.

CARRIE

We’ll walk…Lady Melissa Ellington-Evermore can wait!

TRISTAN

(giggles)

Is that so that you can badger me for answers?

CARRIE

No, it’s so that I can take in what I remember about this place and see what has changed. It’s been a long time since I was home.

Leading the way down the stairs in front of CARRIE and out of the house, he takes from his trouser pocket a set of keys and lock the door. CARRIE looks at him suspiciously; why would TRISTAN have the keys to The Old Mill House?

Walking for a little while talking, they came across a small BRIDGE CROSSING; used for those associates of Evermore to make a quick exit from the lands over the centuries.

CARRIE

My Mother used to bring me to this bridge when she felt down or unhappy…Most of the time it was to get away from her Sister, but Maria was something of a stronger woman, to that of my Mother…!

CARRIE stopped. Looking around at TRISTAN, she saw that he was again looking her – really looking at her. He was transfixed on her beauty.

TRISTAN

I’m sorry…Continue, please?

Both CARRIE and TRISTAN walk the rest of the way talking of Lady Evermore and past memories.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

Evermore House stands on more than one hundred thousand acres of land that is both scenic and perilous to the beholder; The Everglades to the east, while to the west, line upon line of Orchard fruit trees and open green pastures enriched by the constant good weather.

  1. INT./EXT. EVERMORE MANOR – MORNING

As CARRIE and TRISTAN approach the main entrance of Evermore Manor, they are greeted by both the staff and Lady Evermore herself. TRISTAN hesitates.

TRISTAN

I’ll make sure that the Station Master has had your things brought up, maybe later we could get together and…!

TRISTAN is interrupted by Lady Evermore.

MELISSA

Oh, my Dear, you’ve arrived. That Brother of yours should have…

CARRIE cuts her Aunt off in mid-sentence.

CARRIE

Aunt Melissa, I would like you to meet Tristan. He was gentleman enough to save me from a very awkward situation, one which Edward will have told you all about, I’m sure?

Everyone’s eyes were on TRISTAN. Especially those of Melissa’s.

MELISSA

Tristan, huh! Well, you’d better come inside and join us for some Morning Tea. Come, Carrie, I’ll show you to your room.

CARRIE was showing herself a little unsettled with the way in which her Aunt passed off the introduction to TRISTAN. Following after her Aunt along with CARRIE, the two made their way through the halls.

TRISTAN

This is beautiful!

MELISSA

The whole house is having a makeover in a couple of weeks, you’re Uncle decided to hold it off until you returned to University. How are things there, Carrie, at University I mean?

Melissa turns to CARRIE for a response.

CARRIE

(sighs)

The same.

Continuing walking down to the end of the corridor, MELISSA turns suddenly to climb a long flight of stairs, leading them both upstairs to CARRIE’s room. MELISSA turns to TRISTAN.

MELISSA

I’m afraid there are no men permitted upstairs during the day, Mr….?

TRISTAN

Just Tristan, Lady Ellington-Evermore, and if it’s Okay with Carrie, I would like to accompany her to her room. I promise, I will be the perfect Gentleman!

MELISSA stares at TRISTAN for one brief and intense moment. Just as CARRIE speaks up.

CARRIE

Don’t worry Aunt Melissa, I can take care of myself…Besides, this one’s a shy one. Last night he put me to bed…!

MELISSA

(shocked)

To bed!

CARRIE

Yes, to bed, where I slept alone all night. This morning, however, when I awoke, I was not met with the Caveman approach that I had envisaged Tristan to do, but instead, walked all the way here to show he was of good sorts. (laughs nervously)

MELISSA is shocked by the report from her Niece. But she knew her well enough to know if she was lying – and this occasion she was not.

MELISSA

Alright, young man, but I’m keeping my eye on you…And you, too, Carrie Brindley-White!

CARRIE looks back with a mischievous look and giggle as TRISTAN escorts her to the bedroom door and waits to be invited inside.

TRISTAN

You’re Aunt Melissa is a very cautious woman.

CARRIE smiles and sets off a blush.

CARRIE

Does she have cause to be, Mr. Lazenby?

Inviting him into the room TRISTAN closes the door after them and turns to CARRIE.

TRISTAN

The way that you laugh!

CARRIE looks at him waiting for more information as to why he said what he did.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

The way that you laugh, is like you feel happy with yourself. Do you feel happy, Carrie?

CARRIE ponders on the question for a moment.

CARRIE

Of course I’m happy, what exactly are you getting at Tristan?

TRISTAN

This evening the town is having a celebration, I would be honored if you would accompany me as your chaperone?

CARRIE is taken completely by surprise.

CARRIE

I’m sorry, tonight is simply out of the question. Maybe my…Maybe…!

CARRIE collapses. TRISTAN catches her fall before she can hit the ground, and lifts her up into his arms. Calling out for Melissa, he places her down on the bed and waits.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

CARRIE has lost three days through her Blackout which in-curd a mild coma. She cannot remember anything of these lost days.

  1. INT. EVERMORE MANOR. CARRIES ROOM – NIGHT

The dim-lit room is silent, dark and shifting slowly with the light of the moon outside. In the bed CARRIE lays, her head shaking from side to side, her body writhing under the blankets – a Nightmare.

CARRIE

(screams loudly)

T-R-I-S-T-A-N!

CARRIE looks around the room to notice that he isn’t there with her. Attempting to get out of the bed she collapses, again. From the bedroom door she manages to make out a couple of shadowy figures before again, she falls into a light unconscious state.

MELISSA and a couple of House Staff come running into the room and find CARRIE on the floor. Clicking her fingers at the House Staff, they pick her up and carry her back to bed.

MELISSA

Well, she’s out of her Coma! Go fetch Mr. Lazenby, please?

While waiting for the staff member to bring TRISTAN to Evermore, Melissa sits by the side of CARRIE, nursing her arm and looking down at her.

From the doorway a female Staff Hand taps gently on the door, so as not to alarm MELISSA or CARRIE.

MARJORIE

Shall I fetch the Doctor, Lady Evermore?

MELISSA

He’s already on his way, Marjorie, but you can inform my Husband that both I and his Niece would be pleased with his presence…

MARJORIE

You’re Husband, Lady Evermore?

MELISSA looks at the Staff Maid as if the woman is going out of her mind.

MELISSA

The tall gentleman who joins you all for tea every morning…Lord Evermore! (becomes angry).

MARJORIE looks across to one of the other Staff Hands, who shakes their head discreetly.

MARJORIE

Of course, Lord Evermore, I’ll bring him as quickly as I can, Ma’am…

MELISSA

And bring some fresh water, too!

MELISSA sits with CARRIE the whole time while TRISTAN finally makes it to the house and is met with a very worried MELISSA.

MELISSA checks CARRIE quickly before walking out of the room to meet TRISTAN, just in time before he can enter.

MELISSA

Wait. When she awoke…?

TRISTAN calmed his rush to enter the bedroom.

TRISTAN

When she awoke?

MELISSA

She called your name out.

TRISTAN calmed himself down and gathered his composure while standing in silence. Running his fingers through his hair he turned to MELISSA.

TRISTAN

I have to see her. I have to see that she is alright!

MELISSA nods her head, giving him permission to go on in to see CARRIE. Entering the bedroom he sees that CARRIE is on top of the bedclothes wearing her pajamas, and when TRISTAN finally plucks up the courage he moves closer.

CARRIE is laid still, as if she was still in her Coma. The light of the Moon is upon her face, giving a display of peace and radiant beauty.

TRISTAN

(whispers softly)

Carrie, can you hear me, It’s Tristan.

CARRIE stirs in her sleep, her eyes eventually opening to see TRISTAN’s beaming smile at the side of the bed.

CARRIE

That’s twice now! (whispers weakly).

TRISTAN

(confused)

Twice!

CARRIE points her finger into the air, though the effects of the mild Coma are making it go everywhere but the place she wants it to go. TRISTAN catches it and holds it in his hand. All that TRISTAN could do was look right into her deep sea blue eyes, while on occasion scanning her whole face.

CARRIE

You look at me strangely, Mr. Lazenby, but why?

An unnoticeable amount of dread fills TRISTAN’s face, as to the question he thought would never come so soon. But there were rules!

TRISTAN

Do you know where you are?

CARRIE gives TRISTAN a distant look.

CARRIE

Canterbury!

TRISTAN is knocked for six! His whole body was submersed with a feeling so long passed.

TRISTAN

Canterbury, Okay. Do you know what year this is…?

CARRIE suddenly becomes angry with him.

CARRIE

Just leave it alone, will you, Tristan?

Suddenly, TRISTAN doesn’t feel too good about himself.

TRISTAN

Are you thirsty?

CARRIE

Yes (her tongue explores the inner realm of her mouth searching out some form of liquid) Could you ask my Aunt Melissa if she can get the Cook to make a Hot Chocolate for me, please?

TRISTAN smiles; this is a different side to CARRIE, a more gentle and non-stubborn one.

TRISTAN

Sure, I’ll go now…!

CARRIE panic’s suddenly.

CARRIE

GO! GO WHERE! (she becomes anxious).

TRISTAN

Woh there, Carrie! Where are you going?

CARRIE is battling with the bedclothes to get out of bed to join TRISTAN by his side. Falling out of the bed onto the ground, TRISTAN watches her carefully.

CARRIE

With you!

TRISTAN concedes to the act of compassion and helps her back into bed, and then sits on the edge while cuddling into her. A moment later a Staff Hand passes the door.

TRISTAN

(grabs their attention)

You there! Could you please inform Lady Evermore, Lady Carrie Brindley-White would like her Cook to prepare a Hot Chocolate drink for her, please?

The Staff Hand looks at TRISTAN oddly, before they shrug their shoulders and leave hastily to pass on the message. CARRIE laughs out loudly.

CARRIE

My Aunt Melissa doesn’t like being summoned in her own house, you do know that, don’t you?

TRISTAN didn’t look the least concerned.

TRISTAN

To be honest, you’re Aunt Melissa seems to like me for some unknown reason…!

CARRIE

(excited)

LIKE! I think she might be in love with you, I mean, who wouldn’t be…?

CARRIE had overstepped the boundary of “Truth“, while riddled with excitement from the statement.

TRISTAN

Do you remember when I mocked you’re Puppy Fat?

CARRIE

Actually, if I remember correctly, it was my Wonky Belly Button that made me angry, Mr. Lazenby. Not the best remark to make I must say, especially to me!

While distracted with CARRIE, the door of the bedroom burst open with MELISSA and several Staff Hands rushing in to see what all the noise was about – though MELISSA had other thoughts on her mind as she entered angrily. Nodding his head TRISTAN walked over to MELISSA.

TRISTAN

(whispers discreetly)

Are you sure she’s ready for this?

MELISSA took TRISTAN by the arm – Hard – while leading him out of the bedroom into the hallway.

MELISSA

(angrily)

Are you mocking me, Sir?

TRISTAN

No, whatever would give you that idea?

MELISSA

Nobody summons me in my own house, Mr. Lazenby, not even if they are made like an Adonis, be warned!

TRISTAN considered his arse well and truly tanned.

TRISTAN

My apologies, Lady Ellington-Evermore. Of course, my reasons were only of the best intentions for Carrie, though that is no excuse. I’m sorry.

MELISSA chuckles to herself so much that TRISTAN begins to chuckle, too. This, however, didn’t last very long as the House Hands escorted CARRIE out of her bed, across the room and out of the door.

CARRIE

I would like to go outside Aunt Melissa…With Tristan…Alone!

Silence descended upon the whole room, the laughter and teetering doing nothing but get in the way of the statement.

Melissa conceded.

MELISSA

Alright, but you’ll have to cover up nice and warm, it’s a bit chilly out there.

Asking the House Hands to take her back into the room to help get her ready, MELISSA closed the door and stood with TRISTAN outside in the hallway.

TRISTAN

(quietly)

She doesn’t remember me!

MELISSA

Are you surprised! (waves her hand erratically in front of her) I’m sorry, I should not have said that.

TRISTAN turns to face MELISSA.

TRISTAN

No. No, you shouldn’t have. You and I know the reason…

MELISSA takes a hold of TRISTAN and silences him.

MELISSA

(stares into his face)

You do know, that if Carrie finds out…It could kill her!

TRISTAN knew. He glances away from her stare.

TRISTAN

I know the risks, Melissa, but from where I’m standing, Carrie’s condition is getting worse – not better!

MELISSA is silent for a moment.

MELISSA

Don’t get clever, Tristan! As I see it, you’re…relationship with my Niece, was never sanctioned by both our families…

TRISTAN

(angrily)

Damn it, Melissa! Love is not an object that you can buy and sell, it’s a human part of our lives.

MELISSA looks at TRISTAN coldly.

MELISSA

You’re right. Love is not an object, Tristan, but you will find that Desire is! And what my Niece is to you, is an object of Desire.

TRISTAN is beside himself with building rage.

TRISTAN

(warning tone)

Take your best shot, Melissa, I’m sure that you have the ways and means to get rid of me. But while Carrie’s still alive, you couldn’t function without her. This game is over. Do you hear me – over!

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

  1. EXT. EVERMORE MANOR, FRONT ENTRANCE – EVENING

Preparing to leave the Manor, both CARRIE and TRISTAN are stopped by the House Hands, who hand them a small sized hamper of food. TRISTAN looks at it suspiciously.

TRISTAN

Well, you have been asleep for three days now, maybe something to eat is better than nothing to eat, Carrie? (to House Hands) Thank You.

TRISTAN takes a hold of the hamper and throws it over his shoulder before walking off down the drive, chatting and talking with CARRIE by his side, until they both reached the end.

TRISTAN

Do you remember Evermore…I mean, do you remember what it was like before your accident that day?

TRISTAN has an anxious tone in his voice – he needs CARRIE to remember the past. CARRIE looks distant suddenly.

CARRIE

Unfortunately, my way back from this whole thing Mr. Lazenby, wasn’t to be easy. Every waking hour I remember something…a little, a lot, too much sometimes. My mind is crushed by the images of…of so many different things…!

TRISTAN

The threat of The Saunders’ Institute, your Aunt was telling me…

CARRIE

The Saunders’ Institute was something that my family plagued upon themselves Mr. Lazenby, not the other way around. My Accident was seen as a course of history that may have seen me dead, while my body and spirit had completely different thoughts on the matter. Unless you believe that my therapy be carried out at The Institute?

TRISTAN is rushed to answer – but for the right answer to be returned he is cautious.

TRISTAN

The way I understand it, my own suggestions on The Saunders’ Institute being the answer would have been no – but…by my own opinion, I stand by the hospital’s report and believe that being home, at University, or even abroad on holiday, you have made a fantastical recovery these past six months just by keeping active.

CARRIE likes TRISTAN’s comment, as well as the way in which he favoured her getting on with her life after such a near fatal accident.

CARRIE

What is it about you, Tristan? (turns to look right at him)

TRISTAN

(puzzled)

Excuse me?

CARRIE

The way that you and I met at the train station, the offer of a lift to Evermore, and the way in which you looked after me during my episode. The Old Mill…The Saunders’ Institute! All of it!

Suddenly CARRIE’s voice begins to fade off into an incomprehensible whisper, until suddenly, she collapses, again. TRISTAN could not catch her in time…this time she was having a violent seizure whilst squirming on the floor.

TRISTAN watches her; it is all that he can do, as well as make sure that there were no dangerous objects of obstruction in her way. When she had stopped he sits down by the side of her and puts her head onto his lap.

TRISTAN

Carrie! Carrie, can you hear me? (tears from his eyes fall onto CARRIE’s face). I’m so sorry.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

It has been thirty-five minutes since CARRIE had first fallen into her seizure, the time spent was on keeping her as comfortable as possible, until at last she snapped out of her semi-unconscious state.

  1. EXT. BURNING MEMORY, EVERMORE WOODS – MORNING

CARRIE finally comes out of her seizure and looks up at TRISTAN’s tear-filled eyes.

CARRIE

Three times now, I’m starting to think that you’re gay Mr. Lazenby – Would I be wrong?

TRISTAN looks down and into CARRIE’s soft sea blue eyes and nods his head.

TRISTAN

(uncomfortable)

No, I’m not gay. There’s just…Wouldn’t even…Are you ready to go back…!

CARRIE thumps TRISTAN in his side with an angry fist, while TRISTAN howls out in an exaggerated display that amuses CARRIE, she springs to her feet too fast. She becomes dizzy headed suddenly.

TRISTAN

Steady, you’ve just had a seizure…

CARRIE

(yells out loud)

STOP IT!

TRISTAN

Stop what?

CARRIE

All of this…this SHIT! Stop it, Tristan, my life is so screwed up without all of this…

TRISTAN

This what? Complication? Recovery? The Saunders’ Institute?

Both TRISTAN and CARRIE turn to challenge one another almost viciously. CARRIE glares into TRISTAN’s eyes, as he too, heated with anger and love for the woman in front of him glares back at her. During this show of the loudest bark something triggers CARRIE’s past memory; a Flashback of the night of her accident three years previous. Her body jolts violently.

INNER-MIND: CARRIE can barely see TRISTAN, as her eyes are gleamed with a past vision of a vivid dreamscape; she is traveling in a car, it hits something hard and flips forward…then the vision ends.

The strength of the memory knocks her, but not enough to put her down. CARRIE is exhausted from the ordeal.

TRISTAN

Are you Okay now?

CARRIE nods before continuing through the woods in the direction of Evermore. Once reaching the driveway gates the two of them face another.

TRISTAN

There were so many people suggesting so many things, that when you finally came home from the hospital, the wrath of your Aunt Melissa scared off all the hounds. It was Dr. Russell who took care of you through the bad spells…!

CARRIE

How do you know so much?

CARRIE was now suspicious of TRISTAN.

TRISTAN

I grew up in Borello, but now all my family and friends are here in Evermore, and as for you Carrie Brindley-White, you were the only one girl who could make me smile, dance and feel what life was all about. You had the zest of something that was beyond my own, the heart so true and…!

CARRIE looks concerned and screams out!

CARRIE

TRISTAN! For gods sake, breathe! I don’t know what you’re trying to tell me, but if you could just get your breath back to normal that would help us both out greatly!

TRISTAN

Greatly! Why Greatly?

CARRIE

Because my legs are starting to feel weak again, I don’t think…!

TRISTAN immediately rushes to her side. Steadying her with one arm over his shoulder and his other around CARRIE’s waist, TRISTAN looks down into her eyes.

TRISTAN

Are you alright to go on to the Manor, Carrie?

CARRIE nods before pointing a spearing finger into the air in front of them both.

CARRIE

(roars loudly)

C-H-A-R-G-E!!

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

AN AERIAL VIEW OF EVERMORE MANOR PRECEDES CARRIE AND TRISTAN’S RETURN. ZOOM INTO CHARACTERS UNTIL REACHING THE MAIN ENTRANCE.

  1. INT./EXT. EVERMORE MANOR, DAY

Both CARRIE and TRISTAN arrive back at Evermore, to be greeted by EDWARD standing in wait at the Main Entrance door.

CARRIE

Ah, Edward, how’s the back? (whispers to TRISTAN) You can let go now, thank you!

TRISTAN makes sure that CARRIE is good on her feet again, before excusing himself for a few minutes.

Both CARRIE and EDWARD are now alone.

EDWARD

The back is a lot better now, thank you Miss Brindley-White. It kept me from my duties this morning, too! (smiles through a hint of excruciating pain)

CARRIE

And what of Mr. Lazenby?

EDWARD looks confused.

EDWARD

I’m sorry Miss, I’m not with you?

CARRIE

Mr. Tristan Lazenby, the man you charged with the task of getting me home last night, you do remember  him, don’t you Edward?

EDWARD nods a confirmation.

EDWARD

The young man from the Station Master’s Office, I didn’t really know who he was until Arthur, the Station Master’s youngest son told me this morning. A bit of a shame about his Mother…But, I guess he made sure you got home alright, Miss? Good Day, Miss?

CARRIE nods a smile before she turns to see TRISTAN return and see her smile, as suddenly, from all around her she can see the Flashback manifesting itself into a giant big picture showcase; first seeing the car, then the smoke…blood! Lots of blood on the dashboard. A hand emerges from behind her…then a face – familiar

TRISTAN

Carrie, are you alright?

CARRIE stands perfect still her stare almost direct, cold, catatonic.

CARRIE

(trance-like)

The car was on fire. The car was on fire and there was lots of smoke…I couldn’t get to unbuckle my seat belt…!

TRISTAN walks up to her, taking her into his arms where CARRIE buries her head into his chest weeping.

Suddenly, there is a third voice that pierces the saddened moment. Lady Melissa enters the room.

MELISSA

You should never have been there at that time of night in the first place! I told your Uncle, you would only find hurt and pain with the likes of…!

CARRIE explodes in anger.

TRISTAN

ENOUGH! That’s enough, Melissa, Carrie’s upset enough without you making things worse. Lend me a hand getting her back into her bed?

LADY MELISSA is not too amused with the bold statement from TRISTAN.

MELISSA

Mr. Lazenby, may I remind you that this is my House, and the rules in my House…

TRISTAN

Carrie is not feeling too well, Lady Evermore, surely formalities and customs can wait until another day…please?

MELISSA stares at TRISTAN for an intense moment before relaxing her head, and then turns away.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

  1. INT. THE OLD MILL – MORNING

TRISTAN awakens from his bed feeling none the better or rested from the day before, his getting up and getting changed into clean clothes is slow. After dressing he phones up to Evermore House and speaks with CARRIE directly.

TRISTAN

I was thinking of the lake, it borders your family’s land, so we could have a picnic and a bottle of wine, maybe (he suggests).

The phone line goes silent for a few seconds.

CARRIE (V.O.)

Okay.

The deal was dealt and he had won the hand. (Camera follows TRISTAN all the way) Leaving The Old Mill, TRISTAN gets into his car and drives all the way to Evermore Manor, where he is met by Edward – The Head Butler.

EDWARD

Miss. Brindley-White will be out to join you very shortly, Sir, if you don’t mind waiting?

TRISTAN didn’t like waiting.

TRISTAN

Is there a problem, Edward?

EDWARD nods.

EDWARD

No, Sir, just a beautiful young woman who wants to look her best tonight, Mr. Lazenby. (smiles).

Right then, CARRIE appears out of nowhere to stand behind EDWARD. Without any more pause, she walks past the Butler and straight to TRISTAN. CARRIE says nothing.

Opening the car door for her like the Gentleman he is, CARRIE is guided and settled down in the seat, before TRISTAN runs around the car and climbs into the driving seat.

TRISTAN

How long has it been since you were last down at the lake, Carrie? It used to be a regular place for everyone in Evermore to hang out, as I’m led to believe!

CARRIE didn’t answer.

Driving for a good five minutes they finally came to the junction that would take them onto Lake View, a dirt road that brought vehicle speeds down. Visually we see debris, both large and small on both sides of the dirt road.

CARRIE

(gasps loudly)

Is that the bumper of a T-Bird?

TRISTAN

(glances over)

There’s that many parts here, that you’d be spoilt for choice in naming them all. This one time…!

Suddenly and without warning CARRIE screams out at the top of her voice for TRISTAN to stop the car – Immediately.

CARRIE

STOP!!!

Stopping the car and switching off the engine, he unfastens his seatbelt and reaches over to check on CARRIE.

TRISTAN

(gasps out loudly)

What the hell! What’s up?

CARRIE

The road…!

TRISTAN humours her and looks out of the windscreen to see a Deer which had been hit by a vehicle and left to decompose. In the meantime, the delay would have them think up a good plan to move it.

Exiting the car CARRIE and TRISTAN stand a few feet away from the rotting carcass. The smell bringing their hands to their mouths to breathe.

TRISTAN

We could go through it…I mean, it’s dead already, and it wouldn’t feel anything.

CARRIE

(gasps)

You would rather do that?

TRISTAN gives a silent “Yes” nod.

CARRIE (CONT’D)

What if we moved it?

TRISTAN

We could tie some rope around the feet and drag it into the side of the road…

CARRIE puts her hands out in front of her, looking at her palms first, and then turns them over before looking at TRISTAN.

CARRIE

I was thinking…

TRISTAN pushes his fingers through his hair; he had already figured out the solution; tie and secure the Deer’s feet with the rope and then tie the other end of the rope to the cars bumper.

TRISTAN

I’ll get the rope and tie its feet…why don’t you get behind the wheel and reverse slowly to drag the rope?

TRISTAN makes his way around the car and fetches the rope from the boot before walking over to the Deer.

CARRIE watches TRISTAN take the rope to the dead animal while scratching his head with confusion. The animal has been mutilated – its legs have been hacked off!

TRISTAN

SHIT! They’ve taken its legs, it’ll have to be the bloody neck…there’s no other way to do it.

CARRIE gives confirming thumbs up before starting the car and preparing to reverse, TRISTAN, too, finally connected the rope end to the car bumper.

Returning to the car he sat in the passenger seat looking down at his blooded hands.

TRISTAN

Could you pass me the wipes, please?

CARRIE looks at the blood soaked hands; the blood shining and gleaming in the morning sunlight, while it gave off a smell that both CARRIE and TRISTAN were not expecting.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

(wipes his hands quickly, then discards the tissues out of the window)

Okay, put the car in reverse and…

CARRIE

(turns with a vacant look)

I can drive, Mr. Lazenby, thank you very much!

TRISTAN sticks his head out of the passenger door window, while CARRIE slowly starts to reverse. It is going good, until suddenly the rope around the Deer’s neck snaps.

CARRIE

Oh shit! (braking hard)

TRISTAN

The rope’s broken.

TRISTAN steps out of the car and approaches the Deer’s mangled remains.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

It’s no good, we can’t move it any closer to the road side, it’ll have to do where it is. (jumps back into the passenger seat). We can get through to the lake, but it’ll be tight.

CARRIE was somehow seeing shards of memory create itself around TRISTAN; pieces of scenery – a place – surrounding his body and making him a part of the Flashback.

CARRIE is within a memory of the accident that had occurred three years before. TRISTAN’s clothes, his hair, his looks, all changed by the past.

TRISTAN and CARRIE are traveling quickly in a car, while behind them is another vehicle flashing its lights and sounding its horn erratically.

TRISTAN

Did you remember the bag, Carrie?

CARRIE searched for the words to answer; this was a time when she had already given an answer, but for some reason she could not find the reply.

Suddenly, the Flashback, painful in its appearance displays a show of fear on CARRIE’s face.

TRISTAN

(concerned)

Carrie, are you alright? It’ll be Okay, I promise. Where we’re going you won’t have to worry about your Aunt Melissa anymore!

CARRIE is speechless.

CARRIE

(whispers)

My Aunt Melissa!

Before CARRIE can answer, the whole Flashback, its surrounding veil of memory shards exploded into a billion smaller pieces that hurtled towards her, making her react with a flinch.

TRISTAN

(grabs a hold of her)

Hey, it’s Okay, you’re Okay

CARRIE is shaken by the experience.

CARRIE

That was strange! (looks at herself in the visor mirror). I just had a vision of you…and me, we were in a car, but the place was a lot different…

TRISTAN looks pale – he is hesitant.

TRISTAN

A different place! What did you see?

CARRIE closes her eyes and searches her mind’s eye; first failing to see anything, but then, suddenly she twitches…she now sees everything.

FADE IN:

  1. INT./EXT. EVERMORE ROAD, 3 YEARS AGO – EVENING

Both CARRIE and TRISTAN are driving down Evermore Road in a desperate rush to get to The Old Mill, while behind them the sound of a car horn is in the distance.

TRISTAN is at the wheel looking worse for wear; his hair windswept, his face covered in blood and his clothes blood stained and dirty.

TRISTAN

We have to gather our things and get out of here, so please, say that you’ll come with me, Carrie?

CARRIE sees herself (through her Mindscape) lean into TRISTAN while giving a wide smile, which was as good a sign as any to confirm. From the back seat there is a third voice that is shouting at TRISTAN, warning him.

MAYNARD

(yells out)

Watch out for the Road Block!

It is too late – TRISTAN crashes into several of the large heavy wood structures, the car and obstruction both splinter, creak, before they push the whole weight of the vehicle up, flipping it forward several times in the air before bringing it crashing down onto and into the conservatory roof of The Old Mill.

Straight away smoke begins to spew from the car’s engine. For eight minutes and twenty-seven seconds, CARRIE feels free – Refreshed and Reborn; the whole feeling of pain disappearing while the whole accident played over and over in her mind. It is now that CARRIE falls into her two and half year Coma.

CUT TO:

FADE IN:

  1. EXT. EVERMORE LAKE. THE PRESENT – DAY

CARRIE has managed to come out of her trance like catatonic state and is now facing TRISTAN with an expression that bares a million questions, yet, only one seems to come to mind.

CARRIE

You found him, didn’t you?

TRISTAN nodded.

TRISTAN

Yes.

For a moment, CARRIE sat fidgeting with her fight against asking him who the person was? Then another moment passed, until she could longer conceal it any longer.

CARRIE

Tell me, Tristan, tell me who he is?

TRISTAN

His name is Maynard, William Maynard…He was…!

CARRIE

(shouts out)

And who in the hell is William Maynard, Tristan? Why did he cause the accident?

TRISTAN looks puzzled by CARRIE’s failure to remember the man – Maynard! TRISTAN climbs out of the car and walks up to the edge of the lake, looking across its waters to see Evermore Manor staring back at him – almost insultingly.

TRISTAN knew the answers to so many of CARRIE’s burning questions, but he had to end all the charades – Today.

CARRIE (O.C.)

You left me sitting in the bloody car Tristan, what the hell was all that about?

TRISTAN turns to CARRIE and looks her in the eyes – deeply. His mouth opening but the word’s refusing to come out.

CARRIE (CONT’D)

(now stood before TRISTAN)

The silent treatment, that’s Okay, I can do stuff like that, too, you know.

TRISTAN laughed out loudly, breaking his stance on being angry – even if it was just for a little while.

TRISTAN

What are you doing, Carrie? (he walks up to CARRIE standing near the bonnet of the car, then lifting her light body up onto the cold metallic cover).

CARRIE is doing silly facial impressions that make TRISTAN laugh even more, before both he and CARRIE turn to look at the scenic landscape view in front of them.

The sound of crickets can be heard from the lakeside under the rapid breathing of CARRIE, who is now comfortable in the arms of TRISTAN. Her head swayed to the left, giving TRISTAN the right manner of access to the nape of her neck. He kisses her softly, at first.

CARRIE gasps – almost moans with the pleasure.

CARRIE

Mr. Lazenby, whatever are you doing?

Moving his head back and looking into her eyes he kisses her full on the lips in such a passionate way, that CARRIE almost collapses back and stops her from screaming out in ecstasy. Alas, it was the mouth and lips of the man she once considered a stranger she now allowed to silence her.

CARRIE embraces TRISTAN firmly, raising her head up forcefully for air, which also gives her time to gather her thoughts and finally confront TRISTAN about The Old Mill.

CARRIE

The Old Mill…!

TRISTAN

(sighs)

Do you really need to ask, Carrie?

Moving away slowly from CARRIE, TRISTAN takes out a cigarette from his jacket pocket and lites it, taking in the flavour of the tobacco, before blowing it out slowly and effortlessly.

TRISTAN

You know, out here in Evermore, you get the life that you make. A few years ago, I met a young woman here who gave me a purpose. Okay, so her Belly Button was wonky and she drove me absolutely fucking crazy when she did certain annoying things that she did, but I loved her with all my heart – and more! That day when I lost her in that accident, there has never been a day pass that I didn’t wish it was me who fell into that coma, not you. Carrie, Maynard needs to be stopped, and stopped he will…by us!

CARRIE listens with all intentions of stopping TRISTAN, but for the tracking Maynard down and doing something she could never be a part of.

CARRIE

After a speech like that you want to go find a man who made you lose sight of the road and put me in a coma? Seriously, I’d check that radar of yours, because it is clearly telling you that I like you! I like you a lot, Tristan, doesn’t that tell you something?

CARRIE remembers back to when she was practicing her speech in front of the mirror in the passenger seat, while listening to Darude’s Sandstorm record back in the car. True, it wasn’t this speech, but it was close enough.

TRISTAN gave a sad look.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

What? You stand there looking like you’ve lost a friend, Tristan, so what’s the big deal? I was only in that coma for two and a half years, and six months ago…!

TRISTAN is suddenly interested in how CARRIE is feeling? She is seeing nothing – but deep in her stomach she is feeling a strange tug.

CARRIE

(holding her stomach)

I don’t feel well; I think I’m going to be…!

CARRIE throws up all over TRISTAN without as much as a warning; facial or otherwise. The sick is all over him; face, hair, shirt, even his trousers.

TRISTAN

(screams out)

S-H-I-T! (jumps back).

CARRIE is stood looking drained; her face pale, eyes sunken and her body coming over all weak.

CARRIE

I’m sorry, Tristan…it just happened!

There is a long pause of silence that didn’t claim a refusal to answer; it simply gave TRISTAN time to pull himself together.

TRISTAN

That’s quite alright, I’m quite used to being covered…by my Brother’s one-year-old Son, Alistair. He’s always bringing up his milk, and unfortunately, it seems to be me he does it to!

CARRIE laughs uncontrollably, until TRISTAN shows a bemused look, before he walks back to the car and opens the boot to display a change of clothes waiting inside a sports bag; spare trousers, shirt, tie, socks and shoes.

CARRIE

What exactly is it that you do…For a job, I mean?

Taking of his shirt CARRIE turns away quickly, while TRISTAN shows a sign of amusement in her embarrassment. When he has finished he closes the boot and sits back against it.

TRISTAN

I’m an artist. After leaving school I decided to go against the grain a little, that grain being my parents’ wishes to see me in politics. I did my first painting here at Evermore, up by the Castle Keep…it sold for more than I expected it would, too.

CARRIE (SUBTITLE)

So, Tristan was a painter!

CARRIE was impressed.

CARRIE

When you say it sold for more than you expected, do you mean like…!

TRISTAN puts up a pausing, quietening hand.

TRISTAN

The Old Mill was pretty expensive to convert, as you can imagine. If I decided to sell it on the market today, I’d say it would drag its heels at five, maybe six.

CARRIE whistled a “WOW!“.

CARRIE

Half a million, that’s not bad…

TRISTAN

Half a…No, I mean five or six million, Carrie! That coma must have taken your brain for a spin! (he jokes). Would you like to see my collection sometime, if you’re not busy with your Aunt?

CARRIE gives a wandering smile.

CARRIE

I bet if you dig deep enough Mr. Lazenby, you’ll find some other line that will finally get me into your bed – with you in it too, of course?

TRISTAN blushes. He wasn’t the only one to break character.

TRISTAN

Yes.

TRISTAN speaks straight faced, until he sees the look of awe on CARRIE’s face, and then starts to laugh uncontrollably, while pointing a waving finger at her. CARRIE does not like this.

CARRIE

Well, you’ll have to run fast and hard to catch me! (she goads him).

CARRIE runs as fast as she can across the grass to occasionally discard her clothing, until finally she is naked and heading for the cool waters of Evermore Lake. TRISTAN is awe-smacked.

CARRIE

Come on, get in while it’s cool! (she waves at him while she treads the water)

Without any more thought TRISTAN shakes his head once, before looking around to make sure that there were no others watching them, and then rids himself of his clothes before he makes his way across the grass and into the water to join CARRIE. Finally they are together – up close and personal, holding onto one another while keeping afloat.

CARRIE

Who are you Mr. Lazenby? I mean, who are you really? (she gasped while keeping the water from going into her mouth and moving closer to him).

TRISTAN reacts in the same way; moving forward in the water until his face is close to hers, then kisses her deeply and passionately. They are both excited.

CARRIE suddenly breaks away for no reason that TRISTAN can think of, which beckons him to look around the water.

TRISTAN

What is it, what’s wrong? Is it something in the water? (he begs).

CARRIE laughs as she swims back to the lakeside edge.

CARRIE

(happily amused)

Oh, it’s something in the water alright! Come on let’s go dry off before the sun goes down…Race you to the car.

CARRIE swims as fast as she can to the side while TRISTAN follows shortly behind. Finding the side of the embankment a more comfortable spot to lay in the sun and allow the warm summer breeze to dry them off naturally.

The heat, other than that they were both giving off, was hot out of the shade. The weather seemed perfect – more than perfect. They lay down together side by side on the sandy short beach-like embankment.

CARRIE

I saw you here once before…!

TRISTAN

Before today, do you mean?

CARRIE

Naturally, I never knew you before last night, did I?

TRISTAN raises a single poised finger.

TRISTAN

But the accident!

CARRIE

(demandingly)

Yes, the accident, Tristan, tell me about the accident?

TRISTAN sighs, raising himself up onto his elbows and looks out across the lake.

TRISTAN

These past three years have been pretty hard for you, I know that – I understand that. Today is a special day and to ruin it with smoke from the past would be a dreadful shame. (he jumps up to his feet) Which reminds me, there’s a bloody good bottle of champagne in the boot, I won’t be a minute.’

TRISTAN turns and leaves for the boot of the car – still naked – where a few moments later he returned to CARRIE with the hamper that MELISSA had had prepared for them the previous night, to find CARRIE unconscious and hardly breathing. Blood was seeping from her eyes, nose, mouth and ears. She doesn’t look good.

TRISTAN

(screams out loud)

Nooooo!

FADE IN:

  1. INT. EVERMORE GENERAL HOSPITAL – NIGHT

The Doctors and Surgeons have been working on CARRIE for more than four hours, treating her condition the best they can. Outside in the hallway LADY MELISSA ELLINGTON-EVERMORE, LORD DAVID EVERMORE, TRISTAN LAZENBY and CARRIE BRINDLEY-WHITE sit comfortably in CARRIE’s recovery room, while The Chief Surgeon – ALAN WIESLER – explains the situation.

WIESLER

The tests that we carried out earlier show a tremendous acceleration of the brain swelling around the damaged areas treated three years ago, and to be honest, I would prefer to send Carrie to The Saunders’ Institute…Just for a few days, that’s all!

Wiesler’s words provoked an attack of both verbal objections and close physical confrontations.

MELISSA

Are you out of your fuc…!

CARRIE

Aunt Melissa, please! Can we hear him out at least?

Wiesler thanks CARRIE with a smile before he bows his head to the floor and waits for silence. Suddenly, everyone in the room becomes quiet.

CARRIE

You were telling us that I have very little time left to live, Mr. Wiesler, that there may be a solution to my condition over at The Saunders’ Institute, am I correct?

The Surgeon nods with an uneasy look.

WIESLER

I’m sorry, Carrie, what can I tell you that you do not already know?

CARRIE

The truth. All these years I have lived under the shroud of shards to help share my existence, when all this time, my life was ending – not just on that day of the accident on Evermore Road, but well before it even happened!

Wiesler grabs CARRIE’s attention.

WIESLER

Could I have a quiet word with you alone please, Carrie?

CARRIE

Actually, Mr. Wiesler, I’m sure that everyone will be only too happy to wait outside, while we talk…

Within moments everyone in the room, except for WIESLER and CARRIE made their way outside and closed the door behind them.

CARRIE

How long? How long do I have left?

WIESLER gives a deep sigh.

WIESLER

Not long I’m afraid!

CARRIE is beside herself.

CARRIE

Right, Okay. So, will I have time to water my Goldfish and feed my bills!! I mean…!

CARRIE had heard her mumbling mistake, a sure sign that the condition was getting worse.

WIESLER

The swelling from the initial damage has subsided to leave a growth that is beyond our expertise, or anyone’s expertise really. The swelling will cause adverse effects to many of the physical sides of your daily life, including memory interruption…!

CARRIE

Wha…What are you saying?

WIESLER

The swelling cannot be stopped, however, there is a procedure that the Physicians of The Saunders’ Institute are taking to the board next month which may give you a chance to live longer, if I could…!

CARRIE throws a hand up in the air to silence the Surgeon.

CARRIE

NO! The Saunders’ Institute is the last place in the world I would turn to Mr. Wiesler, so please, do not insult my intelligence. How long have I got left…a year? A couple of months? Weeks, even?

CARRIE feels woozy all of a sudden.

WIESLER

To be honest Carrie, I’m surprised you are still alive and talking to me now. If I hadn’t have checked your charts before coming to see you, I’d have had the morgue come down here and take you away. (his voice becomes distant sounding to CARRIE) I could give them a call now if you like?

CARRIE was suddenly hearing a graying echo of the Surgeons voice, distorted by the woozy feeling she had. The room started to grey, darken and emit a heavy atmosphere.

CARRIE

(whispers)

But I’m not dead…!

CARRIE suddenly starts to sway from side to side before falling unconscious. The hospital room now becomes filled with Doctors, Nurses and Porters who work on CARRIE.

WIESLER

Get her to Theatre…Now people!

FADE TO:

  1. INT./EXT. EVERMORE GENERAL HOSPITAL – NIGHT

Everyone is sitting in the hallway outside the Operating Theatre when WIESLER emerges blood stained and looking tired.

TRISTAN

How is she? Is she…!

Both MELISSA and DAVID notice TRISTAN is talking to the Surgeon. MELISSA rushes over.

MELISSA

Mr. Wiesler, may I remind you…

DAVID

Leave him to his job, please, Melissa?

MELISSA

Very well.

Leading TRISTAN, MELISSA and DAVID into the Patient Lounge, Mr. Wiesler offered them a seat while he got comfy in front of them all.

WIESLER

Carrie is in a very serious condition, I’m afraid. The procedure that is used in cases like this have failed to take effect, which means, the swelling will continue to build until it shuts down all brain activity. I’m very sorry, but Carrie has not got long to live…!

The whole room falls deafly quiet; nobody wants to say the first words, words that may bring more than objections. Lord David was the one who finally speaks up and breaks the uncomfortable silence.

DAVID

Can Carrie be taken home, Mr. Wiesler? Can she be moved?

WIESLER pouted his lips and fell into deep thought.

WIESLER

I guess she can be transported to a place more familiar to her surroundings, comfortable and…

MELISSA

I would like to take her home, please, Mr. Wiesler! Evermore is her home, she deserves to be there at the end…does she not?

TRISTAN waited until MELISSA and DAVID had decided on whom it was that was to take CARRIE home – back to Evermore Manor – where she would waste and fade away inside a darkened bedroom.

Knowing deep down that if MELISSA pushed the issue, she would more than likely win. TRISTAN bided his time, however, he waited until Mr. Wiesler took both MELISSA and DAVID to his office to sort out the details. It is now that TRISTAN returns to CARRIE’s room.

CARRIE

Tristan, my Aunt Melissa is making plans for me to be taken back to Evermore Manor.

TRISTAN

You’re going home, Carrie.

Preparing the I.V, before lifting her thin, delicate and weak, fragile body out of the bed and into a nearby wheelchair. He made sure that she was safely sat down before pushing CARRIE out of her room into the corridor.

He walks slowly and calmly while pushing the wheelchair to the Lifts at the end of the corridor, past Mr. Wiesler’s office and the Nurses Station.

CARRIE

Where are we going? Are we going on ahead, Tristan…to Evermore?

The pain starts to show on TRISTAN’s face, but not in view of CARRIE.

TRISTAN

Yeah, that’s right, we’re going on ahead. Now, we just need to be quiet going to the car. We don’t want to disturb anyone now, do we?

The reaction from CARRIE was expected to be that she had suddenly realized what he was trying to do. Just as the lift doors were about to close shut.

CARRIE

Wait!

TRISTAN

What is it? What’s wrong?

CARRIE lifts up her head the best she can and gives TRISTAN a strained smile, before turning back to look at the floor.

CARRIE

I don’t want to…

TRISTAN

Carrie, I don’t want to argue with you –

CARRIE slams her hands down onto the arms of the wheelchair to make TRISTAN listen to her.

CARRIE

(she struggles)

I want…to go to…the Old Mill, to be with…you.

TRISTAN is overwhelmed with both fear and joy; suddenly the pressures of the situation was starting to subside, his fear now less than when he discovered along with the others that CARRIE was dying. Allowing the lift doors to close, they both made their way down in the elevator to the car park. Once here without being detected, he helped CARRIE into the car before driving off.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

  1. INT./EXT. EVERMORE ROAD/LAKE – NIGHT

TRISTAN had managed to drive away from the hospital quite calmly, CARRIE also calm, too, sitting looking out of the window into the night.

CARRIE

(whispers)

Are we nearly home, my love?

TRISTAN’s eyes filled up, he began finding it hard to answer without choking up. Holding it all back he turned the wheel of the car and made his way to Evermore Lake.

Stopping the car with a long, screeching skid across the dry grass, he jumps out of the car to run around to gently pick CARRIE up into his arms and carry her across the embankment to where they had been earlier. Setting her down on the dry sand, CARRIE is at first surprised, until feeling the familiar texture beneath her – she was happy.

TRISTAN

I used to bring my wife here; it was like paradise to her – to us both, even. So many memories. So many good times. This is where I got…!

CARRIE

You got down on one knee…and proposed…to a woman who didn’t deserve you!

CARRIE suddenly remembered something that has TRISTAN beaming a contented smile.

TRISTAN

You threw the ring in the lake (he choked back his tears and stifled  laughter).

CARRIE tried to laugh, too, but for the lack of energy she gave up.

CARRIE

Hey…I love you…I always will.

TRISTAN feels something – a bad gut feeling – and the power of it coursing through his body forces him to look down at CARRIE. Her face showed a glow that TRISTAN recognized only too well from his time in the Army, but all the same, it was the deathly glow that only came from those who had passed away – CARRIE was dead.

TRISTAN

Don’t leave me, Carrie! Please, don’t leave me, my love…I…!

Lifting her limp, lifeless body up into his chest, TRISTAN lets down his every defence and began mourning her death, the death of a best friend, Soul mate – the death of his wife. The death of CARRIE BRINDLEY-WHITE. Weakly he takes out his mobile phone and seeks out the number for MELISSA.

TRISTAN

(pulls himself together)

We’re at the lake, you need to be here…(hangs up the call).

His initial loss is emotionally tearful, filled with anger at himself, at others, too, including CARRIE’s Aunt Melissa. For the last remaining minutes before MELISSA and DAVID arrived at the lake, TRISTAN was quiet…Sobbing with tiredness.

DAVID

It takes a man to protect those who we love, but takes a Husband to make all those things right! That night on Evermore Road, you and Carrie were never supposed to be there. Maynard was our catch, nobody else’s, and yet, he got past us. You did well, Son!

TRISTAN remembered back to that night, the vivid feel that he felt covering him as slowly he started to see the turn of events after DAVID and MELISSA came rushing back to Evermore Manor.

MELISSA is shouting and screaming at DAVID over his lack of security, while MELISSA strode into the house and came face to face with WILLIAM MAYNARD and an accomplice – JACK FLAHERTY – both men are armed with handguns, MAYNARD throwing an accusation of being shot at, while FLAHERTY lay on the floor bleeding out.

TRISTAN

You knew Maynard and his partner were in the house that night, didn’t you? (he growls angrily).

DAVID breaks his confident stance.

DAVID

We were tracking him…

TRISTAN

The gun!

Finally, he was told, while seeing it as he had seen it that fateful night before the crash on Evermore Road…

DAVID

Maynard was tied to both Melissa and I’s work, he had gone rogue. That night when we turned up at the house, we were delivering him to some associates of ours, who in turn would make Maynard and his partner in crime disappear. Unfortunately, Maynard somehow knew of our plans and retaliated against us, and in the process shot and killed your Mother – Eva Lazenby. I’m so sorry, Tristan, for your loss…

TRISTAN

He killed my…!

Quickly, DAVID takes a firm hold of TRISTAN and pulls him close to comfort him in his time of grief.

TRISTAN (CONT’D)

What do I do now, David? I’ve lost everything.

DAVID pushes TRISTAN away from him slightly.

DAVID

Be the Husband and make things right, Tristan!

This was the very last time that TRISTAN saw of Lord David Evermore.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

  1. EXT. EVERMORE CEMETERY – MORNING

It is the day of CARRIE’s funeral which Lady Ellington-Evermore has arranged and organized. All the mourners, well-wishers and guests are taken down to Evermore Lake Crypt, one of several three hundred year old Family Burial Shrines around the grounds of Evermore.

The Vicar carries out the short service, the sealing of the coffin and the final prayer, before everyone disperses from the crypt. MELISSA makes an immediate bee-line for TRISTAN. She is holding a long envelope in her hand.

MELISSA

I was going through some of Carrie’s things and came across this letter…it’s addressed to you, Tristan. There’s also an address, you may be interested in making a personal call, of course, under the circumstances The Hive could bring you closure, perhaps!

MELISSA handed him the items, especially the piece of paper with the address written on it, and then the letter sealed in the envelope.

TRISTAN

What is it?

MELISSA looks down at the ground before looking up and into TRISTAN’s eyes with a cold look.

MELISSA

Her confession!

TRISTAN takes the letter from MELISSA before seeking out a quiet area to read it to himself away from the others.

Opening the letter he discovers that the first sheet of paper that accidentally fell from it was the official deeds to Evermore Lake. Putting this to the back of the letter he began to read the personal correspondence penned by his wife – CARRIE:

CARRIE (V.O.)

Dear Tristan, Words cannot describe how everyone is feeling right now, and that goes especially for you, my love. The man you have been tracking down during my condition doesn’t matter anymore – he is dead, just like me, so please, give up your search to avenge me. You mean so much to me, it will be hard for you to let go, but in time you will be able to keep me in your memories – Good memories and for that alone, I was so honoured to meet you, to be a big part of your life, even if for a short time. As you can see with the papers, the lake is yours now, to make more memories and make that next lucky woman laugh just as much, if not more than I did. Take care my love. Love Always – Carrie.

TRISTAN’s tears begin to stream from his eyes, rolling down his cheeks and onto the small piece of paper that MELISSA had handed him. CARRIE was gone.

Unfolding the piece of paper with the address scribbled on it, TRISTAN wipes his eyes before looking down at it: WILLIAM MAYNARD, 387 Sussex Grove, Borello.

Glancing around as though this was some sort of trick, TRISTAN turned back to the address. Checking the rest of the paper he found that in the top right hand corner a small insignia: The Knight’s Castle, London.

TRISTAN

(giving a devilish smile)

Well, William Maynard, I guess today is the day!
